His collaborative mixtape with That Andy Guy, FUSION DANCE, dazzled you!* The works of Shady Monk, a pioneer of digital fusion as the genre came into its own, have been in rotation here at FNL HQ for quite some time, so I'm all the more stoked to be able to work with him to bring you his latest full-length! (I'd say "and greatest", but everything he makes is equally stellar. You couldn't possibly make me choose.)

Welcome to STORAGE SPACE! This huge album has been growing and evolving since 2020 (feels both so long ago and just like yesterday, huh?) and the end result is an awesome experience through our relationships with escapism. Shady Monk's style is ever so bouncy and comforting, here laced with a bit of bittersweet wistfulness. Cuts like FROST BYTE! and Off But Still On evoke console puzzlers of the turn of the millennium, while Isometry, Evening Floaty, and Factory Reset add a dash of mechanical wackiness. To me, this album feels like exploring all the different rooms of a large house, and spending the afternoon finding all sorts of little ways to keep yourself entertained.

The past few years have indeed set some pretty high records for unprecedentedness, but works like this album prove there is still room for compassion and enjoyment throughout all the craziness.

"I've been working on this record for the better part of 3+ years. Much of the over-all concept was born out of a response to things related to the COVID-19 pandemic, either with themes of 'Escapism' and 'Isolation' (and the comfort that can come with it at times), or wanting to mentally remove myself to a safe space away from reality, as well as binge-watching trash TV with my partner, like 'Love Island', which definitely inspired the album cover and some of the track titles (such as 'Villa Dreamin'). Aesthetically there's also some loose nods to the liminal spaces present in "Hyperbolic Time Chamber" vibes from 'DBZ', the digital world as depicted in the 'Digimon' movie from the 90's, and my love for Pokemon (with 'Rare Candy'). I hope you enjoy this journey from start to finish!"
